LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN
Ochoco Mountains
Lookout Mountain is the highest spot in the Ochoco Mountains. We went looking for what we thought was Lookout Mountain trail, but ended up hiking the short Baneberry loop and part of the Independent Mine trail. |

There are wildflowers galore in the Ochocos. Here are two varieties along the Baneberry trail, within view of one of several convenient benches. |

We hiked two trails in the Lookout Mountain area - the Baneberry Loop and the Independent Mine Trail. Elevation: Baneberry elevation is 5,753 feet; beginning of Independent Mine trailhead is 6,193. We only had time to hike the first two miles, putting us at 6,475 feet in elevation. The summit stands at 6,900 feet. Trail distance: The Baneberry trail sign indicates a 1/2 mile loop, but from the parking area and back is .9 mile. The Independent Mine trail is 8 miles to the summit and back. This 8 mile loop trail travels through mysterious old growth fir and pine thickets. As it gains elevation, it meanders through beautiful mountain meadows and reaches to the top of Lookout Mountain. A shelter is located near the top. Rated: Baneberry is easy with gradual climbs; Independent Mine trail is a more moderate workout. Latitude: 44.20398 Longitude: 120.21563 Directions: From Prineville, travel 15 miles east on US 26. Turn right on Road 123 (sign indicates Walton Lake and Ochoco Ranger Station). Travel 8 miles, then just past the ranger station, turn right on Forest Road 42. Travel another 6.5 miles, watching for the sign that indicates Independent Mine and Round Mountain Trailhead. Baneberry Trail: Drive up the mountain to the signs indicating the Baneberry Trail. Independent Mine Trail: Drive further up the mountain to the point where the road ends. The trailhead is marked with a sign. Fees: No fee |
