METOLIUS RIVER TRAIL
| |
The Metolius River gushes out of the base of Black Butte, and travels about 30 miles before it empties into Lake Billy Chinook. We hiked an easy stretch of the river from Canyon Creek Campground to the Wizard Falls Fish Hatchery that took us through old growth timber and along a steep canyon. What looks like small waterfalls here are actually springs coming out of the side of the mountain. |
There are several inviting places along the river to stop and enjoy a cup of hot tea. |
We went back to the Metolius in January, this time parking at the Wizard Falls Fish Hatchery and hiking upriver. |
Wizard Falls, surrounded by the Deschutes National Forest, offers a park-like setting in the spring, summer and fall with its display ponds and interpretive signage. The grounds are also beautiful when blanketed with snow in the winter. |
We walked the trail in our hiking boots, but some winter days may require snowshoes. |
In several places along the river -- summer or winter -- the water is a beautiful aqua-marine color. |
Snow was falling the day we hiked, creating a hazy backdrop for the beautiful views. |
