PROXY FALLS/LINTON LAKE
|
|
There are two 100-foot waterfalls at the Proxy Falls site - the Upper and the Lower. We scrambled down a steep trail from the viewpoint of the Lower Proxy to get this photo from water's edge. It's a popular stop on the McKenzie Pass, so be prepared for crowds. |
The trail takes you through old growth timber, across a lava bed, and back into timber. |
The trail signs are vague, so when you come to the first "Y", veer to your right to the Lower Falls viewpoint.
|
Head back to the "Y" and follow the main trail until you come to a second intersection. A right turn will take you down to a splash pool at the bottom of Upper Proxy Falls. The pool has no outlet; apparently it filters down through lava and emerges a few miles further down the canyon. |
| Upper Proxy Falls is also 100 feet in length, but Gary scrambled across the creek and climbed the hill a short ways to snap this photo featuring the upper half of the waterfall. |
Just 1.6 miles from the Proxy Falls trailhead is the trailhead to Linton Lake. It, too, starts out in old growth timber, does a switchback up across a lava bed and then drops back down into timber. Your first glimpse of the lake is caught through the trees on the trail that skirts the lake for 1/2 mile before dropping down to a sandy area along the shore. |
Linton Lake sets in a basin surrounded by mountains. Like the splash pool at the bottom of Upper Proxy Falls, there is no apparent outlet for the water. It, too, filters down through lava and emerges elsewhere. |
