Mt. Bachelor

Mt. Bachelor

Mt. Bachelor has a number of trails and guests are welcome to hike from any of the parking lots. If you plan to trek to the 9,065-foot summit, you can start at the Sunrise Lodge base area (pictured here) and go directly to the top. We hiked to the summit in mid-September with a group of cancer survivors and caregivers.

The lower part of the trail is shaded in old growth timber.

The Three Sisters and Broken Top greeted us across an open space as we came out of the trees near one of the ski lifts.

The trail does a number of switchbacks as it heads upward through lava rock.

On most years, snow fields adorn the mountain year round.

The narrow trail steepens and continues its switchbacks through the lava rock. We strongly recommend sturdy hiking boots, poles, layers and plenty of water.

The views from the top looking north take in the Three Sisters and Broken Top, with Three-Fingered Jack and Jefferson in the faint distance.

Looking southwest from the summit, several of the lakes that are featured along the Cascade Lakes Highway glisten in the sun.

Early one summer when we had out-of-town guests, we took the Pine Marten ski lift from the West Village base to mid-mountain. We came out on a sunny terrace with panoramic views and the smell of barbecue. Hikers can hike from there to the summit, approximately a 1,290-foot elevation gain.
