JEFFERSON PARK
Jefferson Park is a large, level plateau with several ponds and lakes to explore and overnight camping - but you have to pack everything in. The park is set against the backdrop of Mt. Jefferson, Oregon's second largest mountain at 10,497'. The trail is a gradual upward climb - total 1800' in elevation gain spread over 5 miles. We made the trek in mid-September to avoid the over flux of hikers and campers ... oh, and mosquitoes. But it also meant the wildflowers were not at their peak. |
The trail starts out through tall trees with several switch-backs. |
About 1.5 miles up, turn right to follow the sign to the Pacific Crest Trail.
Coming out of the tall trees, there are expansive views to the west ... |
... with first glimpses of Mt. Jefferson straight ahead.
We were amazed at the hillsides of massive boulders along the way. In fact, there are several places in the trail where you're stepping over and around large rocks. |
Just a little over 3.5 miles up, there is a lovely shaded place to rest within sight and sound of this small series of waterfalls. A makeshift bridge of planks crosses Whitewater Creek just below the falls. |
A little ways further is another crossing of Whitewater Creek. Marlys's weight proved to be too much for this bridge.

At about the 4-mile point, watch for this junction and bear to the left onto the Pacific Crest Trail North. |
Although wildflower activity is waning by mid-September, there are still some late bloomers along the trail.
Scout Lake, one of several in Jefferson Park, is a beautiful deep blue and the first one you see off to the left after you reach the plateau.
